Your Eating Habits

Once you arrive in the Philippines you will have one heck of a shock. If it was your habit to run to Wal-Mart to grab a bag of Burgers, think again the only burgers in the Grocery stores here are shipped from Manila and are thin slices tan not pink, and do not in my opinion taste good. If I want a Burger and I used to eat these burger patties all the time, I have to go to Gaisano and order ground Pork not beef the beef does not taste good but ground pork makes a very tasty burger thanks to a friend and former culinary school graduate and former cook and food manager, Roy Ross. I hope Roy can add more posts on not only his Christianity but his ways of making food taste better.  Hot Dogs except the “Real Foods” brand do not in my opinion taste good especially the red colored hot dogs they sell here. The Real Foods brand tastes similar to the US brand but still aint the same. Now for Pizza most Filipino Pizza will not satisfy your taste buds either. I say most because there are several I have found that will or that are excellent. These are Greenwich, Pizza Hut and Shake’s Pizza all of which I have eaten at, my wife said Yellow Cab Pizza is also good. Most of the pizzas here either use bread as a pizza dough or use something not quite the same as most pizza outlets do in the US. I have even found in Gaisano restaurant something called pizza with tomato sauce with some ingredients and a few slices of sandwich meats and cheese on bread and it isn’t even baked and they call that pizza. In my opinion Greenwich has the best pizza out there.  Another item you can’t find here is Good meatloaf. I used to eat meatloaf and even made it fairly often when still living in Texas. But here I have yet to find any here I like.  I loved a good blueberry pie something you won’t find here as is Apple Pie and peach, sorry no peaches here except canned variety. The only pies you see here are either Buku, Casava, some Apple. One of my best dinners is Thanks Giving, you will likely not celebrate this with the traditional ingredients. I did manage to find some stuffing in the Grocery stores, and you can occasionally find a frozen turkey. But I was not able to find suitable gravy a must or cranberry chunks or paste.
