Another American visits Cebu

I was in Cebu in March, 2012 at a province called Santander on the southern tip of the island and fell in love with the area and the people there. I have been to the Philippines 4 times in the last two years and have found each trip a memorial experience. I also have found the love of my life there and have started the I-129F paperwork to bring her here to the USA. My problem is that as I think about her coming here I find myself missing more and more the relaxed lifestyle and the more than generous and friendly people in the province of Santander. Most of the people that I visited were my fiance’s relatives but the neighbors dropped by also to see the tall big red headed white man who had come to the mountain.

A lot of smiles, handshakes and ideas were exchanged between us while there over a humble meal prepared over an open fire “dirty kitchen”. I viewed the lifestyle, the culture, and saw the respect that each of them had towards each other but most importantly, the respect and kindness they showed me. We laughed a lot over cups of coffee at my pronunciation of different words in their language and I myself got a chuckle when they tried to speak a little English. I even introduced them to pizza, they had actually never seen one.

I rented a 150 cc scooter and drove it to Kawasan Falls there, of course the seat was very narrow for my big American butt and I found myself stopping every 30 minutes or so to get the blood circulating again. But even as I stopped the locals were friendly and stopped to see if I was having a mechanical failure and to find out if they could help me in any way.

As a native east coast North Carolina resident all of my life, I was raised with these types of values. To respect my elders and stop and offer assistance when someone needed help. A trait long lost in today’s society. I suppose that is why I am so in love with Santander, Cebu. I found a place where the values and respect that I thought was long lost flourishes.

My goal is now to get my fiance here, marry her and work a few more years and then to go back to the place where my heart is telling me to go. A tropical paradise where I can once again find peace in my mind and body. Wish me luck.
