Good info. Seems like a nice place for retirement. Only doubt if it’s a good place for a Christian with all the muslim influence. I mean when it comes to safety.
I used to work there. As a non Muslim you are discriminated by law. Malaysia has supported Muslim extremists for many years and still does, offers a safe haven for Muslim extremists in southern Thailand and elsewhere.
The Muslims are very kind people. You will not need to look over your shoulder.
Thank you. Thank you.
You are so welcome
Hope you guys are doing well.. Hey Dan, would you say penang is the equivalent to phuket, I am interested in Malysia very much.. and looking for a place like phuket? thank you.
They are almost nothing alike. Phuket is beach, woman, and food centric. Penang is culture and food centric. The beaches are way outside the population and not as nice as Thailand.
How limited are you now under lockdown? Are all restaurants and non-essential businesses closed as they are in the US or is Indonesia more relaxed about it all? Thanks for this video!
Gipsy Dean – Yes, I did miss that. Thanks.
We have passes that allow us to leave the house for 4 hours twice a week. Otherwise we are not allowed outside. ๐
Perhaps you missed the fact that he is in the Philippines at this time.
Ok Dan, another great video!! Great pictures!! You guys stay safe!!
Thank you! Will do!
thanks for your informative info on youtube,
just curious, i dont have any debt and have $5,500 dollars per month net amount after taxes, where in malisa is good to retire for me and my wife, we have lived in philippines for 10 years and now back in usa, i like long walks hopefully on somewhat flat ground, not extreme mountrains,
does malisa have any cooler areas of the country to retire to and still not too far out, living in a city will be ok, close to markets, food etc,
thanks and both of you stay safe
@Vagabond Awake thanks so very much,
you and your girlfriend look like a perfect couple,
be SAFE
Small colonial era cities check out Penang and Malacca. Large world class metropolitam city, Kuala Lumpur. Borneo for jungle lovers.
Forget about cost of food. I can eat just as cheap in the USA as I do in Asia. Food costs are the last things people should consider before moving their lives to another country half way across the world, where they do not know the language or culture and will always be seen as outsiders. Why not address some of the unpleasant realities of living Asia, such as the fact that you’re not likely to make many if any real friends. It can be a VERY lonely life if you move to another city in your home country. Imagine how lonely it can be if you move to a completely different country. Let’s get serious here. Traveling is one thing but no sane person moves from the country where they have lived all of their lives, where their life long friends and family are, to a foreign country. If they do, they will move back home after realizing these issues. I know this because I went through it. Your videos are all scripted like B movies. May sound good to naive people, but most of what you speak of is fake.
Qiang has been with me since 2016. I have been doing this since 2007. Some people make friends easily some do not. All of my best friends have come through school as a child and word as an adult.
The best way to do it is you marry in to the place and culture. Yes the language barrier is severe in some of these countries, but through dating sites you can meet English speaking mates. Perhaps you should be thinking of a Latin American country where the language barrier can easily be overcome. Or maybe just go down to Mississippi or Alabama and see how you like itl Dan would not be doing all of this if he was alone.
i grew up in the philippines but when i moved there i only have one friend who moved back 4 years earlier, to this day i hardly have friends, most are acquaintances. i am just fortunate my partner happens to be my bestfriend too.
Another cool video – thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Hi Dan. I have traveled to over 120 countries since 1985. I spent 6 weeks in Penang last October and November. If I had to chose a place to settle down, Penang would be my first selection. It would be definitely possible to live on less than $1000 per month, my tastes and budget allow for more luxury- no question Penang has excellent value. There is also affordable and excellent medical and dental care, modern malls and infrastructure. Most people speak English, grab taxis are cheap and convenient. Penang is well known for its local cuisine. The airport has direct flights to many places in SE Asia, is close to town and very streamlined. Kuala Lumpur has a large airport connected to the world, and is also the hub for AirAsia- affordable flights. I would recommend Penang to expats as a retirement destination. Malaysia has the areas best retirement plan for expats- not the bargain basement expats- Don’t purchase a place, always rent, this gives you maximum flexibility, especially in retirement. I am 57, and my strategy is to keep moving and visiting the world, having a base for a few months at a time to relax and recharge. Stay safe!!
Thanks for adding such important data to the conversation Berry.
Some of the best tips I’ve seen on living in S.E.Asia , especially on how to eat & stay within a budget.
Glad it was helpful!
The problem now is nobody knows what the new normal will be and how long these lockdowns will last, whatโs for sure the situation will be different in every country, in a way doing vlogs like yours I think your going to have to visit the Countries all over again ha ha guess thatโs a positive! If possible of course.
A litt;e extra travel never hurt anyone Roy. Thanks, Dan
Hi Dan, could you please make a video on things you bring with you and how you travel with such few items? Also maybe if you and girl friend can show us your bags with all the stuff you travel with on the bed so we can get a idea of what we need to pack. Thank you.
This is about a year old? https://youtu.be/VSNPDXWHOBc
Thanks for commenting. It helps our business grow. Best, Dan
