HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Many townfolks wonder why their annual fiesta will be held on May 15 – 16 wherein they venerate San Juan Nepomuceno and San Isidro Labrador as their patron saints and call their town San Remigio–so they said that San Remigio is a unique name for it does not derive even from its patron saints.

History reveals that San Remigio was formerly known as “Kanghagas”, the name of a tree, which grew abundant in the place. When the Spanish conquistadores came, they identified a town site by clearing the kanghagas trees through self-help labor. It was governed by a captain or gobernadorcillo.

Lavilles in his book, “Cebu”, recounts that Kanghagaswas a barangay unit of Punta, a part of the municipality of Bogo. Sometimes in the early 1800, Punta was renamed Punta Isabel, in honor of Queen Isabela II of Spain. This marked the beginning of its social and educational advancement because people from the scattered area learned to settle in a common place.

MORE HISTORY

When the marauding Moro pirates swept through the shores of northern Cebu, the townfolks organized themselves into homeguards through ronda system under the command of a Spanish sentinel, by the name of Remigio Multon. His bravery and heroism during the fight against the pirates gained himself distinction as he was honored by prefixing the word “San” to his name-to lend religious dignity to his name. In addition to his honor,Kanghagas was later renamed as San Remigio which later on became the seat of the local government. As a sign of gratitude to him the residents named the town in his honor and endowed him with saintly assets. Eventually, San Remigio became the name of the town as this replaces Punta Isabel.

About the later part of the 1820s, the Spaniards converted Punta Isabel into a town headed by its firstGobernadorcillo, Capitan Juan Goopio, through a representative election participated in by the Cabezas de Barangay of the six original barangays, namely:Hagnaya, Punta, Tambongon, Victoria, Kanghagas and Mao.

  1. Ron I adjusted the spacing a tiny bit. I added a half carriage return above each caption, that’s a shifted Return. and added my spacing character the “|” colored light green so it is practically invisible above the sub titles so they have better spacing, check it out.
