Which is better Luzon or Cebu

I have been asked this question many times so I thought I would create a post based on an email I sent out earlier today.

His question was “Given that US citizens have been warned about traveling in Mindanao, is Cebu a safe place for Americans to retire? Is Luzon a better choice than Mindanao or Visayas?”

And my response to him was this post. My feelings based on all I have read and herd about Mindanao, is that I would be afraid to live there in Mindanao, too much activity for my likes, although some seem to like it. Maybe they like living dangerous, you know, the excitement in it. Personally I like the Cebu area have been living here on and off since 2004 and traveled the mountains in between Bogo City and Cebu City many times without incident.

Now as to living in the Northern parts of the Philippines, well, you have to remember typhoons are plentiful here in this tropical world, however most track up over Luzon, Luzon has, plenty of earthquakes, storms, land slides and crime. Sure Cebu City has crime as do all cities, but not near as much as say Manila and that metropolitan area.

If you like being near all the action then somewhere in Cebu the Cebu City would be good. On the other hand if you are looking for a super quiet almost no crime small city environment, then I suggest Bogo City. Bogo City just recently became a city and they have just about all you need to sustain life. In town there is a Gaisano, with a movie, there are banks and shops and a huge public market, and the ocean is right there. Bogo is only a one hour ferry ride to Bantayan Island a tourist spot without the price tag of most. You can eat a nice breakfast for 129 pesos or stay in a hotel for 700 pesos there. Bogo City is about two and a half hours ride by car to Cebu city on the main highway. So for a short two hour scenic ride you get all that is in Cebu City also.

There are a surprising number of Foreigners living in the Bogo, Medellin, San Remigio area, they com for the security and peace and quiet. Then just by chance, I have my big house for sale in Bogo City see the house here: http://retiringphilippines.org/2011/04/01/house-for-sale-ph/

San Remigio is really nice, it’s on the west coast of Cebu right on the ocean. This area is also quiet and almost crime free and lots of foreigners as is Medellin. If you explore my website, especially all the posts you will find all the info you would ever need to need on how to make the trip a fun, safe and good one. I also list a lot of other websites that have their own special content on retiring here in the Philippines I don’t consider any of the other retiring in the Philippines websites competition as we all have our own way of presenting the information and a lot of it is specific to their areas. Don’t be afraid to take a short trip over here to have a look see, find out if this will work for you or not. In some areas you will find lots of dirt and muddy roads however you can also find areas as modern as any in the US or Europe or anywhere else you find modern cities. Check out some of the videos posted on my site get a feel for the areas here. Remember you can live here a lot cheaper and on as little as $1000 a month.
