I couldn’t agree more with all this
Plans? I don’t need no stinking plans! But seriously, I do normally plan on staying at a hotel the first few days until I find something cheaper and to my liking. After that, it’s fair game. Only real plan is…where am I going to relax on any particular day.
The Thai vans are death wagons.
Once in S.E. Asia flying is very cheap. Ie. $111 from bkk to Siem Reap non stop.
Literally lol That was both funny and educational! I learned and enjoy this one, Thanks
Your t-shirt is killing it!! Kellogg’s pop tarts. 😁
I agree with you, book first hotel in thailand than ask people around where to go. Good times Thailand, great place to die.
I think your regular video’s are great but this one really made me laugh it was good to see a different side of you and the blooppers were hilarious. Keep up the great work.
Even some smaller hotels are cheaper, online. A little bit, anyway.
The small hotel in I stayed at, in Kamala, was cheaper on Agoda than booking at the front desk.
Khao Lak is so great…call Bikker bar for transportation! Stay at Mouth resort…
First 3 nights in Bangkok, everything else is easy to organise from hotels, travel, flights to other countries, never plan anything beyond your first three nights its an adventure.things change so quickly in Thailand just go with the flow , lay back and let it happen. Will be back in November for a few beers at Cheap Charlies in On Nut in Bangkok
I’ve been married to a Thai and going to Thailand for 30+ years. We’ve never planned out our itinerary which in recent years extends to 6 weeks. Never had any issues or regrets. A vacation should not be an exercise in logistics. I have a friend who’s wife is that way and he hates it. Sure you should plan to some extent, but you need to build flexibility into that plan, because…. nothing goes as planned. 🙂
but dude, what if there were only a guesthouse, managed by someone i trust BUT unlike other guesthouses had 4 & 5 star mattresses, thick walls (quiet) and cool balconies?? if I could find that in saaaaay *20 SECONDS*…in a app???? well, I’d pay for THAT!…
This is the first time I have ever seen you do you like a comedy routine of back-and-forth between you and someone else was very entertaining
and if you walk down the street approx 9.30 in The morning , you’ll find a tour shop offering a discounted tour , you can get 1/2 price if you look around
Rob- Has anyone ever told you that you look like to singer of the Australian band, Midnight Oil?
YES!!!! Rob this is excellent advice. Everyone who goes to Thailand needs to see this video!
That Lionel guy is a worry dunno where I have seen him before maybe at the Thailand club sandwich convention…Plus you 2 together and it aint raining…What is going on ?
Ah banjo👍👍👍and acdc..ahhh…and pop tarts yummy
Took the then Thai girlfriend to Koh Lipe in low season. Flew from DMK to HDY (Hat Yai) got out of the airport with no clue how to get to the port to catch a boat. We flagged down a car and he offered a ride for 200 Baht, but he had to make a short stop in Hat Yai to pic up several bunches of flowers. We then had a fragrant trip to the port on time and had a great time on the drive talking to the driver. Koh Lipe was great.
Hey Rob. I love your duo’s with Lionel. Tough this one seems a bit forced to me. Go somewhere together and sing Jurassic Park again 😊😉😆 Although I’ve just seen we got the Jaws theme at the end 🖒
I will plan on having no plans whenever I decide to come over to Thailand. He is sitting sooo close to you because he likes to sit really close to bald white guys named Thailand Rob. 😆 You can always ask the hotel staff where you are staying about something you need. Eg. taxis, tuk tuks, food, excursion companies etc.
Thanks for the great info on traveling Thailand. 👍🍺👍🍺
Lol, Lionel’s orange hair dye is cool Lah? Sort of Lion/Orangutan shade Nah?
Good fun video. I really like your earlier videos where you wandered down to the beach and then continued on walking around Kamal and talking to the portrait artist and the little bar across from her. Which reminds me, where did the girl go with the hula hoop?
Now that was very entertaining, and good advice as well although I have to say that I’ve used booking. com and got a better deal online than walking into the guesthouse. Walkabout bar in jomtien 700bt go in and ask, so I knew it was 500bt on booking. com so I logged on using their wifi and booked it sat at the bar! Even though I said it’s online for 500 they wouldn’t do it? 😞 odd, but maybe a commission thing. Robs right, just sort the beginning and then play it by ear. I’ve never booked a holiday with a travel shop for that reason. 😊
My wife and I are not going halfway around the world to stay in a pile. I’d rather book ahead, get the hotel you want, the room you want, and get the highest rated hotel for the best price. $30-45 for an amazing hotel is worth paying so you might as well book before you go. We also stay at about 6 locations throughout Thailand, but we also know the areas we like.
If you do book in advance, read the reviews on Agoda and trip adviser. Look for recent reviews and disregard most of the reviews from Malaysians, Indians, and Indonesians. I don’t care if they gave a place 1/10 because there wasn’t a toothbrush, or they didn’t like the halal food in the area, or they wanted to stay in patong but got a place in Phuket town! We’ve only had 1 really bad experience in Phuket, luckily we were only staying at the place for two nights. Left that night, walked down the road and booked another place for like $20. Agoda reimbursed us and we then took a surprise trip for a night with an Italian couple to phi phi. We were back on schedule! So yea, don’t ever get concerned in Thailand! Unless it’s high season on a smaller island!! I’d definitely book ahead
Looks nice quiet season Rob ,, has Kev had his op yet ? Hope he is ok , I know if he has had it he will be in a hell of a state at the moment , but anyway wishing him all the best
Regarding not booking travel, I think it depends how far you are going (and how long you’ve got). If you are going to Samui, or maybe going from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, or some other long distance, I’d definitely book a flight in advance. Day trips you are going to make when you are there, definitely leave that for when you are there. Personally I’d always rather have a hotel booked in advance, but I normally travel Nov-Feb, in high season, and I don’t want to be spending time dragging luggage around looking for a hotel. There probably would be somewhere decent that I could find, possibly cheaper too, but I’d rather pay a little more to avoid the hassle.
Good advice for anywhere in the world, I only book my first night in any destination and either stay if i like or move on, half the fun and finding hidden treasures is in this. only use a metered taxi, can be a few hundred baht difference, i taxied from the BKK to Khao San road for 240 Baht, my mate got stung for 350 Baht from Don Meaung to Khao San not metered, big difference. Helps having my Thai wife with me though lol
Ha Ha Ha yes never make plans… they never work out. it only stresses you out to Plan… Don’t Do it.. Your right Rob… Cheers
Best video format, making it into a comedy routine. Winning!!!
LOL! Great video. The first thing I did, after spending a day in Kamala, was throw all my plans out the window. I don’t regret it.
Yes, I’ve been to Thailand 3 times, and you are 100% right. Rest 3 or 4 days in one place to get over some of the jet lag, unless you are on a 1 week vacation. There are travel tours, taxi’s, vans everywhere. Just walk up to any big hotel and book it, they are in the lobby or next to it. At the bus stations get on the big buses, not the little vans that hustle when you are walking into the bus stations, unless that is all there is. There is an old train station in Bangkok, you can get there on the BTS/MRT, the ultra modern train station will be finished in another year or two. If you are going straight to Phuket or Koh Samui, 1 or 2 days in Bangkok at the end of the trip will do. Hopefully there will be a next time in your future.
very nice 👍
Lionel was high strung! Almost berserk.
Lol, how many Pop Tarts did you have to buy for that free shirt?
Great video, You and Lionel work well together…..
Lionel has been out in the rain too much – his hair has rusted
🎵🎵You don’t have to go home
But you can’t stay here
You can walk, you can crawl
Get carried off by the law
But you will get the hell out of here
.🎵🎵
On a serious note, I didn’t have any of those issues, I booked ahead, and what I wasn’t able to book, my Thai girlfriend booked for us. Oh, and you were also helpful with your Bangkok recommendation. (Thanks, Rob!)
Famous last words:
It’s TRUE, he’s Thailand Rob !
“Bon voyage” :))
Rob, great advice! I lived here 4 years prior to visiting Chiang Mai for a couple of weeks, booked a hotel I’ve seen before, great location. But you know how some places aren’t well maintained. Got to the hotel and in the 3 years I last saw it, became a total dump, luckily I was able to cancel after first day, I actually got a full refund! So good to plan a day or so ahead, make long term plans later on. 🤓👍
Fuck it get motorbike…street food ..massage…lol
I thought this was a very funny video! Liked it. Liked Lionel, will enjoy more with him too.
Hey Rob. I enjoy the unexpected. That’s the excitement of travelling. Have you heard if Kev has had his operation? Thanks for sharing!
Not too shabby 👍😎
Pop-tarts (patent pending) T-shirt must have
Jai yen yen
My experience too 👍
And not all places to stay at is present on internet. Its more of an adventures to just take it as it comes 😎
Be very careful on what you book online as they always look good in the pictures but when arrive it’s nothing like in photos so yeah check the reviews and do be prepared to be disappointed also even the top hotels lack maintenance skills so expect many things to be broken or poor quality repairs.
Best to find newer places as less likely to be worn out or broken. However even modern Thai buildings are sometimes very poor with paper thin window glass and poor fitting aluminium joinery, so do not expect a quiet nights sleep…
I thought it was a good change of pace video and made me laugh. Not the same same as many other sites. Good job Rob.
Booked a car rental for the 29 days we are here, what a lifesaver! And cheap compared to my country a late model Toyota Yaris is just $US300 for the whole time, airport pickup and drop off. That was the best book in advance you can do. Been to Thailand 15 times first time to book a car. But yeah everything else no booking, even dentist and hospital visits do not need bookings. Love the internet everything is so much cheaper! We went to the over rated Cartoon network water park normal farang price 1890 Baht we paid just 650 Baht though klook and totally unplanned.
The only thing you must book is a room with agoda, it’s cheaperbthen book a hotel at the hotel desk
Is lionel swiss? We tend to plan everything in advance. Seems that I’m different. Just running around and find everything. Works in Bangkok, pattaya, korat and phuket ( all done 2019). And i need wheelchair accessible rooms. Luckily i know my taxi driver in Phuket, so my apartment can also be in the middle of nowhere and still affordable. Everyone can find tis type of driver. Be polite to them and don’t assume they’re all pieces of sh1t only because you read this in some forums
You mean they don’t have Thai ice tea, which in the states has milk in it, in Thailand? It is the one thing I never can go without when going to the 24 Star Thai Cuisine
in Lynnwood.
We live in Thailand and now we never book more then one night in a place. It is so easy to find another one…. when I came first time to Thailand around 40 years ago it wasn’t even possible to book advance and there was always a place to stay…
Not one of your greatest videos, never mind always a next time.
Thanks for the vlog and especially the information and your time
Great information Rob, handy for those who are planning a trip, if im on a road trip (motorcycle) normally check it out on google maps, look at where I want to stay, and check out the rate of the day, good for that, but sometimes I like not to have a plan as im not sure where I will be lol, while on a road trip, thanks great video as normal
Hey Rob, I really want to move to Thailand but I hear you can’t stay the whole year anymore. Is this true? If it is how do you get around it? Thanks
Nice one Rob!
The 20SIT and LLL comedy show now featuring at a Thailand beach near you soon…555…you guys crack me up
Hi rob. Brilliant vid, me and the missus are travelling again. We dont really plan, we make it up as we get there. Me my girlfriend and daughter came to thailand last year (july) and the weather was superb. A few downpours. Well were coming again (wahoooo) but in august. Something tells me we have picked the wrong time of the year.
Also do you know if maya beach is still closed.
Hello Rob & Lionel great advice Rob you two are like laurel and hardy or abbott and costello just add Shag and you three will be the three stooges Take Care Guys
Thailand,,,,,, NO PROBLEM
You’re 100% right! Be flexible people…
I made this mistake in Hungary. Rented an air bnb for a month and it was the wrong time and area. I’m making it happen but I should have rented a hotel for a week just like you said and figured it out from there. Thanks for the video and I’ll be in Thailand in October.
I liked the added drama. You’re adorable, Rob! <3<3<3
I like to explore places so I never book more than 3 days anywhere, I’ve never had a problem getting a place with ac and a western bathroom that is decent for less than 1000 baht a night, Thailand is one of the easiest places to get around in that I have been to, even if you want to go outside of the cities.
Thanks for sharing your infinite wisdom 😎
loving the banjo music!
I have only visited Thailand under a dozen times and have always kept it flexible, and it has always worked. Rob’s advice is spot on 100%.
#1 YAY.. Coming in September bro… see you then. Been on a dry base for 6 months, be ready!
