  1. A small city is one with less than 50,000 Medium is 100,000-500,000 Large 600,000-1,000,000
over a million is a metropolis! Best situation is a small town close to a large town!

  2. My fiancรฉe and I travel quite a lot. The cheapest place for us has been Nha Trang, Vietnam. We pay $130 per month for our own en-suite room in a shared house. So thatโ€™s $4 per day includes internet but not electric or water which adds about $2 per day, depending mainly on how much we use A/C. (prices for two people – not each).

  3. Come on Dan, I love durian (almost tastes like a Michelin-3 star custard with a dash of Crรจme Brulee). Not all varieties of durians have a pungent odor. The unpleasant bouquet has been hybridized out in some varieties. And I have sauntered through many durian orchards. I prefer the ‘golden pillow’ AKA monthong. I could have slept next to it. No unpleasant scent. I enjoyed durian every day that it was in season.

  4. the problem with arequipa is that it is too far away from the rest of the world. Even the people in Lima fly to Rio de Janeiro or Miami to experience big city life. Stay out of Ecuador it is a very corrupt country I used to live there, my wife is from Ecuador she and I will never go back. It is hard to find someone in Ecuador that has live there for five years, usually people change their mind and leave. it is very sad because it is very beautiful and the food is wonderful. but after you’ve seen a hundred people dump their garbage in the river you start to think twice about drinking the water. if you move to Ecuador Cuenca is the best because the local government knows how to pay off the immigration people to get you in to stay in Cuenca.

  5. Guys, can you compare these Latin countries to the s/e Asian countries you normally visit, including cost of living?

I like that you broke out 1) beach locations vs higher altitude locations, and 2) smaller towns vs larger cities…especially the two university towns @ 15:07 (have you done the same for any university towns in s/e Asian countries?)!

  6. Hey Dan, here is a sugestion to a video series: sabatic year. In each video you would explore the best way to spend a sabatic year in each part of the world. You can make one for central america, another for southeast asia, another for maxico. The question is where to go for a sabatic year, what to do, which cities to visit.

  7. Yes I too love the ceviche!! Amazing cuisine in Lima. One challenge I have is trying to discover volunteering opportunities. I would be curious on your thoughts, as I like the idea of traveling as you both do, just thinking on ways to give back to the communities I would stay in….hmmmm.
