  1. I certainly can agree that one should know where they want to retire before they retire there. But plenty of people DO NOT need to see more of the world as they have traveled previously and know exactly where they want to retire. At a certain age – waiting 3 to 5 years becomes time lost. Not everyone is in a relationship as you, and they need time to cultivate one somewhere if that is there desire. How long does that take?

A type O Visa is 2000 THB, and renewing with Retirement extension is 1900 THB here in Thailand. No money in the bank required if you have income.

I wish to make a sincere comment to you. Traveling is traveling. Retiring is retiring. Sometimes you are doing both, but in Thailand if you are trying to live here without a retirement visa, you are not playing by the rules if you are trying to LIVE here without proper VISA or VISA extension for living here, then you are attempting to live here long term with tourist visa. Visas for education – less any income requirements I suppose – other then what a tourist visa requires – is still as complicated a matter to renew as is my one year visa.

Further, some people would like to settle down with someone. Sometimes even marry someone with a child. If I waited 3 to 5 years I would be 3 to 5 years older then my current 61. That means I would be attempting to settle at age 64 to 66 right? That changes the dynamic of a relationship and potential partner choices.

Slow traveling is a TYPE of retiring. It is spending one’s retirement time traveling. Not everyone has the same situation as you and the word SHOULD as in “YOU SHOULD”….. really should be banished from your vocabulary. Everyone is different.

One more thing I want to mention as I have seen a previous video of yours where you seemed to claim that anyone who did not wish to live on as little as you seem to must have a drinking problem, or wanted to hang out in bars all the time, and eat western foods.

Traveling is one thing, but I challenge you to live in the same place for a long time and live on noodle and rice dishes on the street. Seriously that is no way to live permanently. When you retire in a location…instead of traveling through let me know how your habits change. I do enjoy a steak. Cooked at home. In a condo with proper stove and ventilation.

Permanence also gives one knowledge of which hospital to use, which insurance to have for health, best places to eat , and return and eat there again and again. Gives local knowledge. For those that want that.

Also with a retirement extension I am still free to travel to neighboring countries, or around Thailand, anytime I want. I just have a home to return to. I can bounce all over asia from Bangkok, and know when I return, my entry is covered.

Finally, I am married and very settled but what if I was not? Does a TYPE O visa w/one year Retirement extension mean I can’t up and go if I wanted? No it does not.

In conclusion, what is good for you, is good for you. I think if one tells THEIR story people listen, and learn, but what reason do you have for telling anyone what they should do? Not getting a retirement visa and traveling around 3 to 5 years may be great for you. Everyone has their own story. That is my advice back to you. I have been living in Thailand now for nearly 5 years.

  2. Interesting advise/opinion… Completely agree with “travel before settling down’… Personally, I’m all about travel. I have been amazed at how so many people label Visas as difficult and there is an enormous about of Wrong info out there – typically from people who have not gotten one. I’ve never had bad experiences. Presently, I have 3 visas from Thailand, Vietnam, China none of them are my first ones, currently I have a Thai retirement visa. IT WAS EASY! I did not need to put thousands of dollars in a Thai bank account.
@3:08 re: .”..need to fly into the country to get a preferred Visa… like Thailand, requires Americans to fly into the country to get the 30 day exemption..” — huh? I know you’ve been here before so I’m unclear why you say that. That has not been my experience, I guess your visa steps are just different from mine.
I’m amazed you are able to travel throughout the Philippines with such ease and pleasure as you describe right now. I have many friends and loved ones in Cebu, Dumaguete, Kalibo, Jamindan and Davao and travel is not very supported outside their Barangay boundaries. Your perspective provides an interesting data point. I’m glad you do videos. Thanks.

  3. 8:33 it would be a nice nugget of information if you tell us where the guy is staying ๐Ÿ™ (country)

You might have much more information about this in your books but giving away a nugget here and there will keep these videos really informative and interesting.

  4. Thanks for these videos. I traveled a year though SE Asia and India in 2018/19 & look forward to returning soon. Your level-headed advice is very much appreciated!
