Bohol Earthquake & Video

Philippines EarthquakeThe Cebu City area does not normally have very many, or very strong earthquakes, but on October 15th 2013 at 8:12 AM that changed.

The earthquake measured in at 7.2 on the richer scale, the epicenter was located 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) SW of Sagbayan town on Bohol Island, at a depth of only 12 kilometers (7.5 mi).  It affected the whole Cebtral Visayas  region, particularly Bohol and Cebu.

This was a shallow earthquake which makes it feel a whole lot worse. Prior to this I have only felt small quakes. Last year we had a strong quake I believe in the 7.5 range but it was between Cebu and Negros and we felt it here like a 4.5.

I will never forget that shaking that morning, really scared me to death. It felt like the walls were moving at least 6 inches back and forth and at a rapid rate, the noise was horrendous.  I was sure this concrete building could not possibly stand such a quake but some how it did, so now I can say I have lived through a 7.1 quake.

Bohol was hit at the center of the island with the aftershocks felt as far away as Cebu, several islands away.  Most of the earthquakes were in the Tagbilaran City are.

Even now I have felt two aftershocks here tonight on the 22nd of October 2013 at 9:30 PM.  The aftershocks in the 4.x range were felt here by a sometimes fairly violent 4 to 5 rocking motions per second.  The aftershocks in the 5.x range were downright scary, may people here in Cebu City had trouble sleeping during this past few days.  Damage was fairly minor in Cebu City compared to Bohol. And my personal damage was very little, nothing was even broken including a glass bottle that fell from a shelf.

Here is a collection of videos taken just 2 hours after the big quake and for several days after, examining the damage around Tagbilaran and Panglao.
