You are not in your home country. The laws of the United States or elsewhere do not apply here. You “rights” disappeared as soon as you stepped aboard that airplane. Do you have rights? Most certainly. However, they are the rights guaranteed to you under the Philippine Constitution, and they differ from your rights back home.

The Bureau of Immigration has wide-ranging powers that are separate from the Justice Department in the Philippines. In effect, under powers granted to the BI by R.A. 144, immigration officers have the authority to be judge, jury, and executioner when it comes to foreigners and Philippine law.
